Als iemand ons een maand geleden verteld zou hebben dat Israël volledig op slot zou gaan ten gevolge van een virusuitbraak, betwijfel ik of we het zouden geloofd hebben. Vandaag is het werkelijkheid. De Israëlische interim-regering heeft stringente maatregelen opgelegd in een poging de rondwarende besmettelijke ziekte onder controle te krijgen. Alles is dicht en slechts een paar essentiële diensten mogen nog in bedrijf zijn. Omdat wij humanitair werk doen, mogen we doorgaan met ons werk en mensen helpen.
‘Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai leerde: een crisis kan vergeleken worden met mensen die in een boot zaten; een van hen nam een boor en begon onder zijn zitplaats te boren. Zijn medepassagiers zeiden tegen hem: “Waarom doe je dat?!” Hij zei tegen hen: “Wat kan het jullie schelen? Je ziet me toch boren onder m’n zitplaats?” Zij antwoordden: “Omdat je de boot met ons erin bezig bent te laten zinken!” (Vayikra Rabbah 4:6, uitg. Margaliot, blz. 91-92) De hele wereld bevindt zich in dezelfde boot. Als we elkaar niet helpen, lopen we het gevaar dat de hele boot zinkt.
Netanyahu hield woensdagavond 25 maart een persconferentie om het Israëlische volk te informeren over de laatste ontwikkelingen rond het coronavirus. De premier opende zijn toespraak met het aanhalen van de Misjna: ’Het redden van één mensenleven staat gelijk aan het redden van de hele wereld.’ Hij voegde een gelijksoortige spreuk eraan toe: ‘Het besmetten van één staat gelijk aan het besmetten van de hele wereld.’’

De Iraanse tak van de organisatie ‘Verbond voor rechten van alle minderheden’ berichtte op 16 februari 2020 dat de Iraanse regering de graftombe van Mordechai en Esther in de stad Hamadan dreigt te vernietigen en de plek te bestemmen voor een consulaatsgebouw van Palestina. Volgens verslaggevers probeerde een groep van Basij (een paramilitaire vrijwilligerstak van de Iraanse Revolutionaire Garde) op zondag de historische plaats plat te walsen als vergeldingsactie voor de ‘Deal van de eeuw’ van Trump. Het is nog onduidelijk of het blijft bij deze aankondiging, of dat het plan zal worden uitgevoerd.
De Syrische journalist Thaer Al-Nashef zei 12 februari 2020 op Al-Jazeera tv:
“Israël is niet verantwoordelijk voor de vooruitgang of achteruitgang van Arabieren. Arabieren zijn verantwoordelijk voor henzelf. Maar Arabieren zouden kunnen profiteren van de uitgebreide Israëlische expertise. Want als we kijken naar het Israël van vandaag – dat een ontwikkeld land is – dan moeten we onszelf afvragen: Hoe komt het dat de Joden, of Israël, het zo goed gedaan hebben? Deze mensen leefden zo’n 2000 jaar in Europa, als verbannen vluchtelingen, in een diaspora als gevangenen en als slaven. Denk je dat in! Toen bewezen ze aan de hele mensheid dat ze niet alleen maar vluchtelingen of slaven waren, maar een volk dat in staat was om wonderen uit het onmogelijke te laten gebeuren.”
Een delegatie moslimleiders bezocht op 23 januari 2020 Auschwitz. Dit bezoek ging vooraf aan de herdenking dat het Poolse kamp, waarin meer dan 1 miljoen Joden werden vermoord, 75 jaar geleden bevrijd werd. Joodse leiders noemden dit bezoek een ‘baanbrekende gebeurtenis’. De secretaris-generaal van de Moslim Wereldbond, Mohammad bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, en de hoofddirecteur van het Amerikaans Joods Comité, David Harris, leidden een delegatie van 62 moslims rond door het Auschwitz-complex.
Een oude Jood komt bij de oorarts: “Ik ben links helemaal doof, dokter.”
De dokter onderzoekt hem en constateert: “Daar is helaas niets aan te doen. Dat is de leeftijd.”
De Jood: “Is mijn linker oor dan ouder dan m’n rechter?”

De onverschrokkenheid waarmee de jonge Israëlische advocaat Calev Myers de BDS-reus bestrijdt, doet denken aan de wijze waarop David de Filistijnse reus Goliath tegemoet trad. Myers’ laatste wapenfeit is de handelsconferentie die hij begin december in Jeruzalem organiseerde. Meer dan duizend, vooral christelijke, investeerders uit 50 verschillende landen deden bij die gelegenheid zaken met de vertegenwoordigers van 650 Israëlische bedrijven. Eindresultaat: investeringen voor ca. 100 miljoen dollar.
Het brandweerteam van het Joods Nationaal Fonds in Israël heeft met spoed een speciale brandweerwagen nodig om de bossen te beschermen. Sinds april 2018 zijn er in de Westelijke Negev al meer dan 1200 branden uitgebroken. Tijdens de zomers van 2018 en 2019 werd het enorme gebied voortdurend blootgesteld aan brandstichting in bossen, natuurgebieden en landbouwgebieden. Dit heeft grote ecologische en economische schade veroorzaakt. Bovendien vormen de branden een gevaar voor de vele gemeenschappen nabij de grens.
Moos was helemaal van streek en kon de slaap niet vatten. Hij had 1000 gulden van zijn overbuurman geleend en had beloofd dit binnen een maand terug te betalen. Morgen was de laatste dag maar hij had het geld niet. Opeens stond z’n vrouw, die heel goed wist waarom haar man niet kon slapen, op, liep naar het openstaande raam en riep uit volle borst: ‘Sam, Sam!’ Aan de overkant ging het licht van de slaapkamer aan en vroeg de overbuurman wat er in ‘s hemelsnaam aan de hand was
Een Joodse man was te water geraakt en dreigde te verdrinken in de rivier. Precies op dat moment passeerden twee politieagenten. Toen ze zagen dat de drenkeling Joods was, besloten ze om hem aan zijn lot over te laten. Met zijn laatste krachten riep de man: “Weg met de tsaar!” De beide politiemannen bedachten zich geen moment, sprongen in het water, trokken hem aan de kant en arresteerden hem vervolgens.
“Wie is belangrijker, de zon of de maan?”, vroeg een leerling aan zijn rabbi.
De rabbi antwoordde: “De maan natuurlijk, want die schijnt 's nachts als we licht nodig hebben, terwijl de zon schijnt als het toch al licht is.”
Voor de allereerste keer was er in Jeruzalem voor het Loofhuttenfeest ook een delegatie christenen uit Egypte aangekomen. Het is moeilijk voor Egyptenaren om Israël binnen te komen omdat ze in hun eigen land met argwaan bekeken worden. Ook voor Israël ben je verdacht als je uit Egypte komt. Het nam verschillende maanden in beslag om 23 visumaanvragen af te werken. Tweeëntwintig visums werden ten slotte verstrekt, maar pas een paar dagen voor de geplande reisdatum. Slechts 16 mensen kwamen uiteindelijk in Israël aan om de reis te maken. Een van hen, Johanna, zei:

Ze noemen zich geen christenen, maar zeggen wel dat ze naar de kerk gaan. Ze noemen zich Messiasbelijdende Joden, maar houden geen sabbatsmaaltijd op vrijdagavond. Even snel een broodje tussen twee diensten door volstaat. Want de jeugd van de Russischtalige gemeente Beit Hallel in Ashdod staat vol in de bediening. Ze vertellen mij daar enthousiast over na de tweede dienst op een vrijdagavond.
Een sjadchen (huwelijksmakelaar) kwam bij een knappe jongeman en stelde hem voor te trouwen met een erg lelijk meisje. De jongeman, die het meisje toevallig kende, dacht dat de sjadchen hem voor de gek hield en ontstak in woede. “Denk je dat je mij voor de gek kunt houden? Wat moet ik met zo’n meisje?” “Wat zijn dan zoal je bezwaren?” vroeg de sjadchen rustig.
“In de eerste plaats is ze blind.” “Is dat een bezwaar? Dat is juist een voordeel. Je kunt rustig doen wat je wilt zonder dat zij het ziet.” “Maar ze is ook stom.” “Dat is toch alleen maar prettig, een vrouw die nooit commentaar geeft?”
“Maar ze is ook doof.” “Wat is er nu fijner dan haar de huid vol te schelden zonder dat ze het hoort?” “Maar ze is ook verlamd.” “Dan hoef je je ook geen zorgen te maken dat ze achter je aanloopt wanneer je op stap gaat. Beter kan toch niet?”
Rosa Meir uit Haifa, 95, zegt dat dit gebaar ‘zo ontroerend en blij makend’ was.
Twee Israëlisch-Arabische loodgieters in de noordelijk gelegen stad Haifa zagen af van het indienen van een rekening van 1000 nis (285 dollar) voor een reparatie nadat ze hoorden dat hun klant een 95 jarige Holocaustoverlevende was.
Simon en Salim Matari zijn broers. Onlangs werden ze gebeld om naar het huis van Rosa Meir te gaan om een behoorlijke lekkage te repareren, zo meldde Kanaal 12.

Op 30 september en 1 oktober is het nieuwe jaar in Israël begonnen. Ook in dit opzicht is het trouw gebleven aan de oude wijze van telling van de maanden en jaren die met de nieuwe maan beginnen. Om die reden valt ook ieder jaar het begin weer op een andere datum. Men wenst elkaar niet ‘gelukkig nieuwjaar’ maar ‘tot een goed jaar zult u/ zul jij worden ingeschreven’. Met deze woorden willen wij ook het hele volk Israël, binnen en buiten zijn land, onze goede wensen voor het nieuwe jaar aanbieden. En al onze lezers wensen wij een rijk gezegend 5780 toe.

O mijn vrienden, wanneer u vernieuwde liefde en belangstelling voor het Joodse volk wilt gaan koesteren, denk dan aan de vaderen. Denk aan Abraham, Gods vriend (Jes. 41:8), met zijn sterke geloof. Die niet twijfelde aan Gods beloften, en zo een voorbeeld voor al Gods kinderen werd.

Vorige week hadden we het voorrecht om twee mijlpalen te vieren. We vierden de vijftiende verjaardag van onze aankomst in Israël. En we vierden (!) de inlijving van onze oudste zoon in het Israëlische leger als parachutist.
De laatste sabbat voordat hij in dienst zou gaan, zat mijn zoon zoals gewoonlijk naast mij tijdens de synagogedienst. Tijdens het uitspreken van de ‘birkat kohaniem’ (de priesterzegen) is het gebruikelijk dat een vader zijn ‘talliet’ (gebedssjaal) over zijn eigen hoofd en dat van zijn kinderen plaatst. Toen we daar zo stonden realiseerde ik me dat ik hem op een plaats had gebracht waarop ikzelf niet voorbereid ben.
